Temporomandibular Joint Disorder/TMD/Tmj Symptoms
The temporomandibular joint connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull in front of the ear. Temporomandibular joint disorder refers to problems related to this joint.
Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) can be caused by injury, disease, aging or habitual activities.
Clenching or grinding the teeth (bruxism) can change the alignment of the teeth, cause muscle spasms and inflammation. Arthritis often affects the temporomandibular joint.
Temporomandibular joint disorder causes pain in the facial muscles and the jaw which can radiate to the neck and shoulders. The pain is present when you talk, chew or yawn and is usually in the joint in front of the ear or elsewhere on the skull, face or jaw. There may be ringing in the ears (tinnitus) or even hearing loss. TMD is sometimes mistaken for an ear infection.
Clicking, grating or popping sounds may be noticed when the temporomandibular joint moves. Your face and mouth may appear swollen. The jaw may lock open or not open at all or may look deviated to one side and you may also have trouble swallowing.
Headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting have been noted with TMD. The headache is usually at the temples and side of the head. People often confuse this headache with a tension headache or sinus headache, but it can be determined to be from TMD during a thorough examination.
There are many and varied symptoms of TMD. The following list attempts to highlight some of them:
- Head and facial pain
- Pain around eyes, watery eyes
- Tooth pain and sensitivity
- Inability to open jaw, or close jaw
- Ear pain
- Dizziness
- Swallowing difficulty
- Neck and back pain
Pain related to TMD may be sharp and searing or dull and constant. Many people are treated for severe headaches with medication, but no treatment for the underlying cause. Neuromuscular dentistry treats the cause, not the symptoms of the headaches associated with TMD.
