Cytokines and Autoimmune Diseases (Paperback) $302.64 Leading researchers synthesize scattered experimental data to help develop an intimate understanding of how cytokines and chemokines are involved in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. The many chapters offer critical reviews the basic mechanisms controlling cytokine induction and regulation, as well as the resulting production of proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines, the former of which induces organ-specific autoimmune diseases. From the vantage of these insights, they address the role of cytokines in a wide variety of autoimmune diseases, uvetis, encephalomyelitis, multiple sclerosis, human type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, SLE, and myasthenia gravis. Authoritative and state-of-the-art, Cytokines and Autoimmune Disease highlights the enormous therapeutic potential of cytokine modulation in the treatment of autoimmune disease. |

Massage Therapy Reduces Symptoms of Various Health Conditions in Brandon 33511, Valrico, Riverview
Shelley Flannery writes in the Fall 2009 online issue of Massage Envy Magazine on how massage therapy reduces symptoms of various health conditions. Since Swedish massage therapy, deep tissue massage therapy, sports massage therapy and pregnancy massage therapy are available in massage clinics in Brandon 33511, Valrico, Riverview and Bloomingdale, residents in these areas can readily avail of their benefits.
According to Flannery, though, the American Massage Therapy Association advises people to completely impart all information on their ailments to their massage therapist during consultations before any massage therapy session. Such crucial information includes being pregnant; having undergone recent surgery or major illness; having had any recent accident; having a heart problem, diabetes, any circulatory disorder, blood clots or varicose veins; having fever, infectious disease, bacterial infection or skin rashes; and taking anti-inflammatory medicine.
Massage has been associated with reducing and managing symptoms of fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, temporomandibular joint syndrome and stress.
The National Fibromyalgia Association defines fibromyalgia as a syndrome marked by chronic pain, psychological stress, fatigue and disturbed sleep. Science has not yet identified its cause, though. It also seems ironic how fibromyalgia patients experience pain with even the slightest touch on certain areas of their bodies and yet can welcome and benefit so much from massage therapy.
Licensed massage practitioner Ruth Werner, nationally certified in both therapeutic massage and bodywork, is the author of the book, “A Massage Therapist’s Guide to Pathology.” She says, “No one has really answered how massage helps fibromyalgia. But it’s been found to increase the amount of time a person has in stage 3 and stage 4 sleep, which is difficult to get to with fibromyalgia. It’s also possible that massage ‘works out’ some of the pain-processing chemicals.”
Another health condition responsive to massage is osteoarthritis. According to Flannery, it is the most common type of arthritis, with almost 27 million Americans suffering from it. Osteoarthritis occurs when cartilage breaks down. Cartilage is the tissue that holds bones together, allowing easy and painless movement in the joints. With the breakdown of cartilage comes pain. Werner explains: “Muscles around the affected joints tend to get tight in an effort to ‘splint’ the area, which actually only adds to the pain and reduces range of motion. Massage isn’t going to fix arthritis, but it will help with the muscle pain and stiffness.”
Temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ) also benefits from massage. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research defines it as a condition characterized by limited mobility and pain in the jaw. Over 10 million people are reported to be afflicted in the United States. Some causes identified include injury or trauma to the jaw, some dental procedures, arthritis, autoimmune disease, infection, hormones and genetics. In 2007, the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies published a study which found that massage can reduce the symptoms of temporomandibular joint syndrome – the pain, limited mobility and clicking in the jaw.
Finally, massage has been found to also relieve stress. Diana Thompson, the president of the Massage Therapy Foundation who is also a licensed massage practitioner, says “There is quite a bit of research out there about massage and the emotional component. In school, we separate the mind and body, but literature shows that massage may be really good at helping with stress and anxiety.” Resolving stress goes a long way in relieving the symptoms of various health conditions and in preventing the onset of new afflictions since stress has been known to weaken the immune system.
Relieve symptoms of fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, temporomandibular joint syndrome and stress through various massage therapy techniques such as Swedish massage therapy, deep tissue massage therapy and sports massage therapy in Brandon 33511, Valrico, Riverview and Bloomingdale.
