What Is The Temporomandibular Joint?
The temporomandibular joints are said to be the most complex joints in the human body, and are located on each side of your face in front of your ears connecting your jawbone to your skull.
How Does the Temporomandibular Joint Function?
The temporomandibular joints pivot and glide allowing you to open your mouth and move your jaw from side to side. A disc of cartilage much like the discs in your neck and back, located between the top end of the jaw and a socket in the skull, acts like a shock absorber, protecting the bones from grinding against one another.
The movement of your jaw is controlled by a muscle group which is controlled by your nervous system known as the neuromuscular system. The jaw-joint is held together by ligaments, which limit the range of motion in all directions. The left and right temporomandibular joints must coordinate movements simultaneously for the jaw to move smoothly, effortlessly and painlessly.
While the actions that open your mouth and make lateral and forward movements are all controlled by the shape of the bones and are an action of muscles and ligaments, the closing point of your jaw is controlled by your teeth meeting, called your bite or dental occlusion.
What is TMD/TMJ?
A healthy, functioning temporomandibular joint system requires a normal structure and normal functioning of all the parts, including the muscles, nervous system, ligaments, bones, discs, connective tissue and your dental occlusion or bite. Therefore, temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD/TMJ, refers to a group of conditions or disorders that involve these joints, the muscles that control the movement of these joints and your bite.
If there is an imbalance in all or one of the parts, such as the muscles, nervous system, ligaments, bones, discs and connective tissue and bite, the result is muscle fatigue, joint dysfunction, and changes in your teeth, which causes a variety of symptoms and conditions, as varied as the people who suffer from temporomandibular joint disorder or TMD/TMJ.
